Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Risen Jesus,
What a joy to baptize Francis (Frankie) Keith Armato on Sunday to celebrate the Baptism of Jesus our Lord. This sacrament brought the lift we needed to begin our second week of the new year.
Let us Pray the words from the Chaplain of the Senate, Dr. Barry C Black:
Lord, sometimes what’s happening in this country feels out of control. We’re swept up in a swirl of charges and counter-charges, lies and half-truths. But you are Truth—and you can handle it all. I put my hope in you, Lord. Help our leaders do the same. Amen.
Connection: On Sunday we heard Paul’s experience at Ephesus when he asked, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came believers?” The response was, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Paul then baptized them, laying hands them the Holy Spirit spilled out on them. He did this by speaking Truth in Love through the Spirit. Not an emotional love, but a love that involves sacrifice. This encounter came during his second missionary journey to visit those in this rapidly growing religion.
Part of the growing edge of in those early times was understanding the love of sacrifice. The love of selflessness. That seeks the good of ‘the other’ and ‘self’. Thankful it continues today.
The Way of Love has been done successfully in our lifetime in South Africa. People like Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela guided South Africans through dangerous times of civil war into a prospering nation. It required its citizens to look at painful truths, then speak about ways of reconciliation that was best for all. They had to do what was just and merciful by exploring the pain and sufferings of the past, then promise and live as a reconciled people.
Epiphany 2021 is our opportunity to be a people of the Spirit that willing sacrifices for the common good with justice and mercy. What a wonderful opportunity to speak truth in love through Jesus our Lord.
